As I sit back and reflect on my career so far, I can’t help but marvel at the incredible transformation that has taken place in the world of records management. From managing large migrations of boxes into store, facilitating deliveries and collections, to offering scan-on-demand services, I have witnessed the evolution of the industry first-hand. Today, I find myself in a new role, working in a commercial capacity to support businesses in their archival and record storage requirements while guiding them on their digital transformation journey.

Having spent years in a records centre, meticulously organising and overseeing the safekeeping of valuable information, I know the potential that digital technology holds. It’s not about replacing traditional record-keeping entirely; rather, it’s about harnessing the power of digital solutions to streamline processes, enhance accessibility, and empower businesses to thrive in the digital age.

In my current role, I find immense satisfaction in assisting companies with their archive and record storage needs. Many organisations are sitting on troves of historical data that hold immense value for compliance, legal purposes, and insights into their growth trajectory. My experience managing large migrations of physical records has instilled in me a profound appreciation for the importance of preserving and managing this data efficiently.

When supporting businesses on their digital transformation journey, I see the twinkle in their eyes as they realise the potential of digitisation. The benefits of embracing digital records management are far-reaching:

  • Accessibility: Gone are the days of sifting through rows of dusty boxes to find a single document. With digitised records, information is a few clicks away, allowing businesses to access crucial data instantly.
  • Collaboration: Digital records enable seamless sharing and collaboration among team members, irrespective of their physical locations. This boosts productivity and fosters a culture of teamwork.
  • Cost and Space Efficiency: Digital storage reduces the need for physical space, reducing costs associated with records centre maintenance and freeing up valuable real estate for other business needs.
  • Security: Digital records can be protected with encryption and access controls, mitigating the risk of unauthorized access and ensuring compliance with data protection regulations.
  • Environment: Going digital reduces paper usage, promoting a greener and more sustainable business practice.

My career move from the records centre to a commercial role has been an interesting experience. I see myself as a bridge between the past and the future, utilising my expertise in records management to help businesses navigate the ever-changing landscape of data and information management.

As I continue to support businesses in their digital transformation endeavours, I am constantly reminded of the importance of embracing change and adopting innovative solutions. The world is evolving, and records management must evolve with it.
